
PEST WARNING SUMMER 2025: Mosquitoes
Going out to the world to give a little reminder to take care and precautions considering the rains and floodings caused by La Niña. Well, it turns out that those wet conditions are great for mosquitoes to thrive and breed, because they love stagnant water for breeding.
Did you know? Mosquito eggs can lie dormant for years waiting for the right conditions to hatch. And guess what?
Mosquitoes are having a field day with all the standing water from the rain and flooding. That means an increased risk of mosquito bites and the diseases they transmit.
Mosquito-Borne Diseases
While were on that note, the Japanese encephalitis virus has been detected in southern and western NSW. Singleton virus along with other viruses, such as Ross River and Barmah Forest — can be transmitted by these irritating mosquitoes. Sadly, already one person has died from JE, and some others have been admitted to hospital.
Symptoms to look out for
Symptoms typically appear 3–15 days after a mosquito bite, including headache, fever, joint or muscle pain, skin rash, fatigue and nausea. Although it is unlikely, some infections can cause serious conditions, including brain inflammation, so watch for concerning signals, including confusion, neck stiffness or seizures.
Reduce the Risk
So here’s what you can do to help mitigate the risk:
Do some sprucing up around your home, removing debris, and especially draining any standing water this can be a breeding paradise for mosquitoes.
Inspect likely breeding sites the bases of pot plants, buckets, rainwater tanks. Be sure to clean and maintain these areas.
And swimming pools, don’t forget about swimming pools Keep yours clean and well-treated.

Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and cover up wherever you can.
Apply a good insect repellent and keep reapplying it.
There are insecticide sprays and vapour releasing units for indoor control, while outdoor mosquito coils can be an alternative.
